I did not know the difference either. Was this a result of a carbine being used by a mounted shooter and the rifle by a foot soldier? The carbine would be easier to shoulder without the curved butt plate and the rifle would be more secure for the soldier shooting from all positions from standing to prone. Does anyone have some thoughts on this?
