Todays Winchester is a 1913 vintage  1892 carbine in 38-40 cal. What is odd about this gun is it is a standard carbine in every way, sights, barrel band, saddle ring, etc. except it has a rifle type butt stock with a curved butt plate. The wood matches so I don't think the butt stock is a replacement so just another strange Winchester ordered this way, I always said Winchester would make every thing but a Marlin!

Swet as always Don!  Afro
I personally like the look of the curved butt stock. I've never shot one to see how it feels on my shoulder, but I love the look!
I also never knew that the curved stock was a "rifle" stock and the straight one a "carbine" stock?  Huh?
So ya schooled this old man today Don.   Wink

Great 92 there don! Afro Afro Cool caliber too. Didn't folks order those carbines with the rifle stocks for the increased LOP?

I did not know the difference either. Was this a result of a carbine being used by a mounted shooter and the rifle by a foot soldier? The carbine would be easier to shoulder without the curved butt plate and the rifle would be more secure for the soldier shooting from all positions from standing to prone. Does anyone have some thoughts on this?

Kb, you could be right about increased LOP, it does seem to be longer then my other 92. Ape, I too like the curved rifle butt plate, then newer Winchesters all came with the large shotgun type, the carbine butt plates are S shaped, you can see them on some of my other photos. I have a nice 45-70 browning Mod 1886 with the curved butt plate, it hurts after a while, have the same gun in a carbine with S butt plate and its not bad. My black powder rifles all have curved rifle but stocks, look nice, hurt bad, still shoot it all day.
Have a great day guys, off to the casino with son and daughter-in-law.

Mkes sense to me Sunset......But since I never knew that was what made the difference in the shape of the but stock......what do I know?  lol

From all the CAS events I've see on TV and in person it might actually be the other way around though? Having that curved butstock might work better for a mouted shooter to make it easier to shoot one handed and keep the gun more stable?Huh?   Undecided

Gee Ape, in all of the cowboy shooting I have done, albeit in my younger days, I never saw a cowboy rifle with a curved butt stock that had such a large degree of curve in it. Take my 1938 RR for example, it has a curve, but not all that great. My 1951 DMC #5 and #25 Pumpers also have only a small curve in the stock.

I don't know what to say.

PS: Except that RR stands for Red Ryder and DMC is Daisy Manufacturing Company! I have a nice bunch of BB guns from when I was a kid also!!!

Well that's kind of what I'm saying Sunset.
All the cowboy action shooting I see is with a basically straight butstock. So maybe the curved is meant more for the mounted rider to keep it from moving around while he or she is riding?

LMAO..... I WISH I still had my toy guns from when I was a kid! I had a few cool BB and pellet guns that I wish I still had! Not to mention a few of my cork guns and other assorted noise makers.  Wink
Congrats to you and your parents for holding onto those.  Afro

Thanks, I had absolutely no idea about stock designs, so everything was just off the top of my head in the first post. When you came back and had a different point of view, I had no defense for my original thoughts so I thought I would just pull your leg a bit.

Good laugh for the evening!! Smiley
